    This clinic had one classroom session in the morning and two riding groups in the afternoon. Sport psychology techniques were taught to increase awareness; build preparation strategies both on and off the horse; and develop effective focus and energy-management skills.

    Graduate course taught at John f. Kennedy University in the master’s in Sport Psychology program. Topics included: assessment of psychological response to injury; exploration of the stages of grief models as related to injury and rehabilitation; tailoring sport psychology techniques to be effective in enhancing rehabilitation and building mental strength; and facilitating successful re-entry into sport.

    Award for teaching in the master’s program in Sport Psychology at JFK University. Courses have included: Performance Enhancement A & B, Case Supervision, Sport Camp Theory and Development, and Psychology of Injury.

    This clinic had two classroom sessions on the first day that included fundamental sport psychology techniques useful for increasing focus and confidence. The second day consisted of riding groups in which participants concentrated on their mental preparation and focus while executing a variety of exercises.

  • Clinic for Central Coast Equestrian Association

    This clinic was held in conjunction with the kick-off event for the Central Coast Equestrian Association. Riders participated in an unmounted group on the first day in which foundational sport psychology techniques were taught and explored. These techniques included: goal setting, pre-performance routines, visualization, positive self-talk, post-ride notes, and focusing strategies. The second day riders were mounted and worked on building their awareness of their mental skills while utilizing their new preparation strategies.

  • Clinic for Horizon’s East Show Stables, Samantha Lanzone & Barbara Endean

    This clinic consisted of an unmounted morning session that taught introductory sport psychology tools and techniques. Three riding groups in the afternoon focused on the use of mental techniques while riding for focus, awareness, mindful preparation and positive debriefing.

  • Clinic for Rose Hill Stables, Hilary Johnson

    Castro Valley, CA
    This clinic was two days and was co-facilitated with Paul Bennett. On the first day riders rode in groups with Paul and rotated through a classroom session where they learned sport psychology tools with Tonya.  On the second day, riders warmed-up in a separate ring, went over mental preparation with Tonya, then rode rounds in a simulated horse show environment where they were scored and heard a judge’s perspective offered by Paul.

    This clinic consisted of an un-mounted workshop on Saturday where participants were introduced to sport psychology techniques including: pre-ride routines, goal setting for focus, positive self talk, the use of visualization at shows and in lessons, and energy management. On Sunday participants rode in one of two sessions designed to put the techniques into action. Riders worked on generating mental focus, mind/body awareness, mental preparation and positive debriefing.

    Horse show simulation to foster mental preparation for competing while mounted. Strategies were discussed to help riders focus, problem solve and build on-course awareness. Unmounted video-review session that allowed trainer insights to blend with rider’s perceptions and evaluations of their own performance.
